Targets
The elaborately created editorial content comes in quick succession and with lots of images. The aim was to make the editors' work as easy as possible. A particular focus was placed on the automatic management of teasers in various forms in order to emphasise the magazine character of the portal.
A particularly fast response time for the pages and a quick and convenient search function were also important to the customer.
Challenges
Technical focus
The main requirement was to technically optimise the portal while ensuring that users were offered a seamless and fast experience.
SEO
Search engine optimisation was a central part of the project to ensure that the portal was easy to find and accessible to a broad target group.
How did we achieve this?
Germany Atlas as SPA
To improve the user experience, we have implemented the Germany Atlas as a Single Page Application (SPA). This solution makes it possible to display content quickly and without constantly reloading the page, which significantly increases user-friendliness.
Teaser functionality
We have created the teasers as a context-sensitive content element. This allows editors to display teasers, e.g. for a specific category, at freely selected positions and the system ensures that no duplication can occur. The overview pages manage themselves so that new content is always prominently advertised.
Asset management
By implementing TinyPNG for image compression, we were able to reduce the amount of image data from 18 GB to 8 GB. This has shortened loading times and minimised data consumption. The introduction of this technology was so successful that we now use it as a standard solution for numerous other projects.
We have also ensured that all images used are protected under licensing law in order to minimise legal risks.
Solr search
A powerful Solr search has been integrated to enable users to search for information quickly and precisely. This not only helps to make content easier to find, but also supports the SEO goals of the project.
The single page application character of the Germany Atlas was also taken into account in the search and the corresponding page is opened from the search with the content found, so that the website visitor is taken directly to the right place.
Integration of an ad server
Taking into account consent management, an ad server was connected that enables the customer to play out flexible advertising formats. These can also dynamically replace individual teasers. This creates an additional source of income for the portal, which contributes significantly to monetisation.
Result
By comprehensively revising and optimising the DB Mobil portal, we were able to create a user-friendly, high-performance and search engine-optimised platform that meets the high demands of users. With our technical expertise and the use of innovative tools such as TinyPNG and powerful caching, we have significantly improved efficiency and user experience.
We were particularly impressed by the positive feedback from the editors who work with the system and are pleased with the many little helpers and the clear structure of the system.
