The Institute

The State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research Munich (ISB) is a central institution of the Bavarian education system. On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, it supports and advises schools, teachers and school management in the organisation of lessons and school development. With scientifically sound curricula, high-quality examinations and practical concepts on current educational topics, the ISB promotes sustainable education.

Targets

The ISB wanted to redesign its website with a modern, inclusive and WCAG 2.1-compliant interface as well as an efficient design with minimal editorial effort.

It was important to the customer that those responsible for the numerous areas should be able to manage their own content, while ensuring consistency of content across the entire website.

How did we achieve this?

Accessible right from the start

In order to meet the requirements for accessibility and flexibility, we developed a system that facilitates editorial work and enables sustainable content maintenance. The strict implementation of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) ensured comprehensive accessibility.

From high-contrast colours and semantic headings to usability with a keyboard and screen reader, all aspects were taken into account so that people with visual, hearing or motor impairments can also use the website without any problems.

Intuitive CMS

To ensure an optimal user experience (UX) and a consistent corporate design, the CMS focussed on an intuitive, simple user interface with sufficient scope for design. Dynamic generation of the navigation minimises manual mistakes and ensures a uniform page structure. These measures result in a user-friendly front end that enables continuous maintenance of the website even in the event of personnel changes and ensures a consistent UX for visitors.

Apache Solr search

One highlight of the new website is the powerful search function based on Apache Solr technology. Users can use filters to narrow down their search queries - for example by school type, subject area, educational level or publication type - and quickly find relevant information.

The faceted search offers intuitive navigation through the ISB's extensive knowledge pool. The accessible design ensures that the search function is also easy to use for people with disabilities, for example via screen reader and keyboard.

The ISB offers numerous newsletters to interested specialist groups. For data protection reasons, no external services should be connected. The creation and dispatch of the newsletters is controlled directly from the CMS.

For the registration and administration of the newsletters, we have realised a simple solution for the visitor based on a “magic login”, which of course also meets the highest data protection requirements.

Result

The new ISB website is a successful example of a modern, inclusive and user-friendly platform in the education sector. It offers a wealth of information and resources that are now easily accessible to all users. The efficient content management and powerful search function facilitate the work of the editorial team and help the ISB to fulfil its important role in the Bavarian education system even better. The consistent implementation of accessibility, the simplification of the CMS and the integration of modern technologies have created a platform that offers real added value for both users and editors.
