API integration (Application Programming Interfaces) refers to the use and provision of technical interfaces with other IT systems to enable the exchange of data between different software applications. APIs therefore serve as bridges to access functions or data that are used or managed in other systems.

These can be simple unidirectional APIs (e.g. the display of weather data) but also bi- or multidirectional systems (single sign-on, user management, integration of HR portals).
